Zurich’s packed diary.
Not everywhere in the city are things as peaceful as in the Lindenhof Quarter. To be precise – Zurich is a hot spot. Out of Zurich’s fully packed calendar here are just a few of the most important annual happenings.
January
CSI.
The CSI is a popular horse show and offers, besides first-class sport, a family friendly program.
February
Carnival.
The highlight of Zurich’s carnival is its colorful procession through the city center. Not for people with an allergy to confetti.
April
Sechseläuten.
Sechseläuten is the traditional spring celebration in the city of Zurich. A parade of 25 Zünfte (guilds) in ancient costumes through the streets of Zurich, accompanied by horsemen and bands. The climax of Sechseläuten is the burning of winter, in the form of the “Böögg,” a giant snowman figure filled with fireworks. The quicker the snowman’s head explodes, the better the summer will be.
June
Zurich Festival.
Over three weeks the opera house and various theaters present cultural treats.
July
Caliente/Longstreet Carnival.
Once a year Langstrasse is taken over by Zurich’s South American community. Any-one who loves to eat and drink is in the right place. The Longstreet Carnival alternates yearly with the Caliente Festival in the nearby neighborhood.
Iron Man.
Iron women and men fight their way through this tough triathlon event to qualify for the legendary Iron Man in Hawaii.
Züri-Fäscht – Zurich Festival.
The Züri-Fäscht is held every three years and is one big party all over the city. Food, music and conviviality come first. The grandiose firework display is the icing on the cake.
Live at Sunset.
Just by the Dolder Grand Hotel, in a clearing in the forest, international music stars are invited to perform at concerts of a special kind.
Open-aircinema on the Lake.
Here you can see not only the best movies in Dolby Surround, but also experience a splendid setting and the rippling of the lake.
August
Street Parade.
Once a year fans of electronic music make the pilgrimage to Zurich to celebrate: probably the biggest party of the world.
Zürcher Theater Spectacle.
Directly on the lake on Landiwiese, there are 18 days of theater of every kind. Besides wonderful performances, you should definitely try the culinary diversity.
September
Knabenschiessen.
Since 1898, about 5,000 young people take up the challenge to become the champion in Zurich’s annual shooting competition (Schützenkönig) taking place in September. Year after year, this traditional Zurich event , which is embedded in one of Europe’s largest fairs, attracts thousands of spectators to Zurich’s Allmend during three days.
Freestyle.ch.
Skateboarders, snowboarders, bikers and other freestylers perform the most scaring of tricks and moves. It is one of Europe’s largest freestyle-happenings.
October
Oktoberfest.
Since 1995 the annual Zurich Oktoberfest is held on Bauschänzli, next to Bürkliplatz. For a month you can sway to folk music, eat veal sausages and knuckles of pork – and naturally drink many, many beers.
December
Zurich New Year’s Celebrations.
At the turn of the year not only champagne corks, but also the fireworks at the impressive fireworks spectacle on the lake, go with a bang.
